On my birthday in 2017, I had the distinctly amazing opportunity to ride through Glacier National Park in Montana. Earlier that morning I had started off my birthday by dropping my motorcycle in the restaurant parking lot and being thrown like a rag-doll about 20 feet. My shoulder was severely damaged. But I had no options so I rode on. I was so engaged with the beauty around me that I really didn’t think much about my shoulder – other than the pain of putting my helmet on and taking my helmet off. I went from East to West so I traveled down the “Going to the Sun Highway” instead of up. This was at the height of the fires raging in the Montana and Idaho mountains and the thick smoke destroyed the visibility for all but a few moments. Adding on to that a storm brought fog and rain and it was a slightly messy situation. I realized later that the smoke represented a ‘moment’ in the history of the area and I have decided to show the images as the park was on August 8, 2017. The distress is part of the reality of the western mountains.
